From The Study
The week has kicked off with a very successful Year 4 trial boarding night. All 31 children (and adults) seemed to come through having enjoyed the experience - and having got some sleep. I understand that the senior boarders played a very important part in making the younger ones feel welcome and overcoming any uncertainties they may have had. My thanks to all those involved in boarding, led by Gregg Lewis and Caroline Matravers-Scott, for making this work so well.

Children in Pre-Prep seem to have had a particularly exciting week, with an Assembly about the Winchester Churches' Night Shelter; a Village Walk (for Year 1); Year 2 visiting the Science Centre; Reception having a great experience of making their own pizzas at Pizza Express; and finishing the week with the Harvest Service in St Mary's Church. While looking at a busy week of trips, we must mention Year 4's trip to the Winchester City Museum, as well as the rearranged trip to Lulworth Cove for Year 7.

In the Prep we also had a Harvest Assembly today, Friday. This was particularly memorable, not only for the wonderful bounty of all the produce brought in by children (thank you parents), but also for Mrs Dodson's highly imaginative blindfold vegetable-guessing game. We were privileged to have a very moving performance of 'Streets of London' sung by Antonia Paterson, accompanied by Mr Hall. We have asked children to explain to parents why we are collecting this produce for the Night Shelter in particular, and I hope they may even encourage you to look at the brief stories with them on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2yrX6ldU4A).

May I repeat our guidance to parents about access to the school buildings: at all usual pick-up and drop-off times parents and carers with children in the Prep should use all available routes to classrooms and school buildings. However, outside these times, please only enter via the front door of the main building. You will understand that we have each child's welfare and safety in mind. There will be times when it takes a bit longer for someone to come to the door - please be patient. We are improving the methods by which the sounder is relayed to other areas when the front desk is unoccupied. Similarly, we are aware that there are occasionally lags in response to the telephone. It is switched through to Matrons once the normal school day ends, but these staff are often attending to essential matters with children. I hope you will experience fewer frustrations in future.

Please may I draw your attention to three events coming up very soon:
Saturday 1 October -  Headmaster's Drop-In session: 8.15 am - 8.45 am in the Sports Pavilion. Just come along for coffee and a chat (pastries provided as well). No agenda. Our turn-out varies from two to a dozen, but this is a really good place for floating ideas and raising mild concerns that can be aired in a more public setting.
Saturday 1 October - Pupil Welfare Group Meeting: 8.45 am - 10.00 am in the Old Dining Room. The theme for this meeting is e-Safety and the use of IT in school. Sally Johnston will be joined by Tim Goldsmith, who teaches IT, and the Head of IT Services, Damien Digby. Please come and hear how we keep your children safe online, and how you can match our protocols at home so that each child has a consistent and safe approach.
Thursday 6 October - Talking Heads Presentation. Adam Williams, Headmaster of Lord Wandsworth College, will speak, on "The Power of the Pupil Voice". This is definitely NOT a sales pitch, but an opportunity to hear a professional in education give a view on a current educational topic. I warmly welcome any parent to attend, no matter what destination you may consider right for your child. Mr Williams will be happy to chat afterwards to anyone with specific questions about LWC. Drinks at 7.00 pm, with the talk starting at 7.30 pm. Mulberry Pavilion.

Answers to last Week's Enigma. All were anagrams of river names:
        EUPHRATES
        LIMPOPO
        TIGRIS
        NILE
        YANGTZE
        TIBER
        THAMES
        DANUBE
        MISSOURI
        RIO GRANDE

This week's Enigma. It is worth having a big piece of paper to note the relationships:

Seven friends collect pop posters and each person has a different number of posters. Angela has four more posters than Mike, who has a dozen fewer posters than Alex, who has half as many posters as Emma, who has seven more posters than Vernon, who has three times as many posters as Sue, who has three more posters than Jenny. How many
posters has each person got if the total number of posters is 82?

        Pupil Welfare Group

Please note there will be a Pupil Welfare Group meeting on Saturday 1st October 8.45 -10.00 in the Boarders drawing room.  Everyone is welcome. The subject for this meeting is ICT and E Safety.
