Happy New Year and welcome back!
This term we are delighted to welcome Mrs Lorena Ross to the Prep as a Year 5 Classroom Assistant. Also joining us in the Pre-Prep for maternity cover is Mrs Ronnie Johns, who is known to us already as mother of Thomas in Year 5. We have welcomed our three new Gap Assistants, all from Australia: Miss Molly Ingram, Miss Millie Heeran and Mr Angus Darragh. I am sure you will join me in wishing them all a very happy time at Twyford.
We ended last term with a wonderful round of Nativity plays and Carol Services, all of which required massive amounts of work from teachers and music staff. My thanks to all those who helped make these important events so successful. Thank you also to all those who contributed to the collections: we raised £1087 for Naomi House.
Term has started at a great pace, with pre-testing already underway for more senior pupils (we have had three sittings already), we have had a wonderful visit from a T Rex (!), and our children have already been very busy in their sports. Congratulations to the girls’ U11 and U13 netball teams on winning the Bryanston Tournaments at their respective age groups. Returning to the subject of senior schools for a moment, please could I remind parents to inform us immediately they know a date for interview/assessment. We do not usually get the same information from the schools, so this can put us all under pressure to ensure a pupil is ‘ready’.
I am keen to flag up the Talking Heads presentation this coming Thursday. Mr Chris Wheeler, Headmaster of Monkton Combe School, will talk about pastoral care. I know that he will be an engaging and interesting speaker, and the subject matter is very important to us at Twyford. Please may I urge you to support this talk, as I must be able to attract these Heads in future on the basis that there is a good number in attendance? If you would like to have a glimpse of just how ‘interesting’ Mr Wheeler is as a person, do have a look at last summer’s Speech Day at Monkton, filmed by the BBC: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27dDX-CpuLw . Please come and support the event, even if you have no intention of considering the school a Head comes from! There is a danger that we will not have these in future…
We have enjoyed a number of festive moments this week: including the Inter-House Christmas Tree Decorating Competition (won by Wasps) – with hundreds of Christmas jumpers being worn, Reception’s very wriggly Nativity, Reception’s Christmas Craft afternoon, Nursery’s Christmas Play and Year 3’s Christmas Show. Some additional events of a non-festive kind were: Year 1’s visit to Minstead Study Centre, Year 4 had an Egyptian morning, Year 6 enjoyed a great theatre trip to see ‘The Borrowers’, Nursery to Year 3 watched ‘Snow White’ performed by the Treehouse Theatre, and Karl Hopwood delivering Internet Safety talks to children in Years 4 to 8, plus one for parents.
Along the way we have nearly concluded this term’s house sports competitions, with only the senior girls’ hockey to be played on Saturday. In the Prep House Competition for this term, Wasps have come out as winners, closely followed by Mozzies, with Bees and Hornets taking the remaining places. The Team Feast takes place this afternoon during Bevers.
One particularly special event was the official opening of the Pre-Prep playground by Ross Brawn, MD of Motorsport. A very significant crowd gathered on Thursday afternoon, in very chilly conditions, to share this event. Mr Brawn was generous with his time, and stopped to chat to many children (and adults). Some children were heard to ask why the playground was being ‘opened’ now, when they had already been playing on it for ten weeks!
Before we look towards the final week of this long term, we have the last Headmaster’s Drop-In session on Saturday morning (8.15 am – 8.45 am in the Sports Pavilion), and an afternoon of rugby training and house hockey. Details of the Carol Services have been sent out to parents, with Pre-Prep enjoying their service on Thursday, and Prep having their two services on Friday.
May I wish you and your family a wonderful holiday.
