ABOUT TWYFORD
Twyford’s spirit is unmistakable. For more than two centuries, it has been a place where children go beyond learning and truly thrive. We champion every child’s unique strengths, helping them grow in confidence within a community that is ambitious yet supportive, forward‑thinking yet grounded in tradition. Our evolving curriculum reflects this commitment to breadth and depth: by Year 8, pupils study 18 specialist‑taught subjects that stretch, challenge and inspire.
“Their strength is the way that education and learning is embedded through everything they do - Twyford teachers have an amazing knack of sparking interest and curiosity for everything. It’s the ultimate all round education.”

A SPACE SHAPED BY OPPORTUNITY
Twyford School sits at the heart of the charming village of Twyford, just three miles south of Winchester and an easy hour from London by direct train. Despite these excellent connections - and the close proximity of the M3 and the historic cathedral city - with sweeping views across the South Downs the School opens out into 50 acres of beautiful, expansive grounds. At its centre stands the elegant Queen Anne building, surrounded by lawns, woodlands, and playing fields that create a sense of space, heritage, and calm.
Beyond the village, the School reveals itself gradually - a hidden landscape of natural beauty and characterful buildings that seems to widen with every step. With so much space to explore and a setting that invites curiosity, energy, and imagination, Twyford offers children exceptional opportunities to grow, discover, and enjoy a true country education without ever being far from the wider world.

BEYOND THE WALL
Slip through the narrow walled gateway and discover a wide horizon of space and natural beauty hidden beyond the wall. It is a setting that enchants - open, generous and full of possibility.
Founded over 200 years ago, Twyford School is thought to be the oldest preparatory school in the country. Yet while we value our heritage, academic life here is defined by a blend of tradition, innovation and a forward-looking approach.
“Pupils’ academic achievement is outstanding, reflecting successful fulfilment of the school’s aim to recognise excellence while promoting an enduring love of learning.”
A FOUNDATION OF DEPTH AND BREADTH
The breadth of opportunity at Twyford is designed to be as inclusive as it is ambitious. Whether through the innovative challenges of design engineering and philosophy, or the creative expression found within our music, art and drama departments, we ensure every child finds their niche.
At Twyford, we believe that academic excellence is born from a culture of high expectations and purposeful challenge. Our curriculum is unapologetically ambitious, setting aspirational standards that empower every child to reach their full potential. We don’t just teach to the test; we cultivate a scholarly mindset where intellectual curiosity is celebrated and academic resilience is the norm.
From the competitive energy of the sports fields and pool to the resilience‑building adventures of Twyford Explorers, learning extends far beyond the classroom. With opportunities spanning chess, linguistic studies and cookery, pupils are encouraged to test their limits and refine their unique talents.
This rich variety is not merely about choice, but about creating the precise environment where curiosity is transformed into a lifelong pursuit of excellence.

At Twyford, we do more than prepare children for the next exam; we prepare them for a lifetime of discovery. By fostering a unique blend of academic ambition and personal confidence, we ensure our pupils leave not only with exceptional results, but with the character and curiosity to make their mark on the world.

At Twyford, the arts are an essential part of school life, fostering creativity, self-expression, and confidence in our pupils. Our Creative Centre is a dynamic hub of artistic and technological innovation, where children are encouraged to explore their talents, develop new skills, and discover lifelong passions.
Here, the arts are about more than just lessons; they are a way of life. Through lessons, workshops, performances, and competitions, every pupil is encouraged to experiment, explore, and excel. The result is a school alive with artistic expression, where creativity and innovation take centre stage.

FROM A PARENT
A CULTURE OF CREATIVE CONFIDENCE
Creative excellence is woven into every part of life at Twyford. From the moment children join us, they experience opportunities that nurture imagination, confidence and self‑expression. Music, Drama, Art, Ceramics, Design & Engineering and Cookery all help pupils discover what inspires them.
Music and Drama run through the rhythm of the school day, giving pupils a rich outlet for expression through weekly lessons from Nursery to Year 8. These sessions encourage collaboration, perseverance and the development of each child’s creative identity. Together, these opportunities create a vibrant creative culture in which every child is encouraged to explore their talents, grow in confidence and develop a voice that is distinctly their own.

WHERE IMAGINATION TAKES FLIGHT
Imagination is the highest kite you can fly, and we watch our children become the heroes of their own adventures as they explore, question and create. Our role, both inside the classroom and beyond it, is to create the spark that will feed their enthusiasm.
Sport to enjoy, sport for all and a great choice of sports - that’s part of life at Twyford.

As one pupil said so perfectly:
"I had fun"
And that continues to be the guiding spirit of sport at Twyford.

SUPPORTING EVERY TWYFORD CHILD, EVERY DAY
Our pastoral care underpins every aspect of school life. It’s not an add-on - it’s at the heart of what we do. From Pre-Prep to Year 8, we take a holistic approach to education, ensuring that each child is seen, celebrated, and supported. Our values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty, Resilience, Responsibility and Friendship shape daily life at Twyford. They are not just words on a wall - they are lived out in our classrooms, playgrounds, sports pitches, and assemblies.
We understand that children grow in different ways and at different times. Our teaching team is highly skilled at shaping and nurturing each child’s individual journey, helping them to stay confident and curious every step of the way. At Twyford, we know that kindness and empathy are as important as academic results - and we celebrate children who show those qualities with as much pride as we do our top scholars, sports stars, artists and musicians.
Twyford has a clear and unwavering focus on the all‑round wellbeing of the children. Our pastoral care underpins every aspect of school life, shaping each day and remaining a central priority through every phase of a child’s time here.
WHERE CARE SHAPES EVERY DAY
We believe in a holistic approach to education - one that embraces our values and builds the confidence and resilience children need to truly flourish. We work continuously to create a nurturing, supportive environment where every child is encouraged to be themselves: a unique individual with unique needs, strengths and potential.
Boarding at Twyford is more than just a place to stay - it’s a vibrant, nurturing community where childhood is cherished, friendships are forged, and memories are made. Guided by a dedicated House Team, we’ve created a true home away from home: a warm, welcoming environment where children feel safe, valued, and free to be themselves.
“If I could, I’d board every day - it’s so much fun! There’s always something different going on, and our Traitors theme night was the best thing ever.”
