Old Twyfordian girls sporting success 10.03.2021

In the spirit of International Women’s Day this week, we would like to celebrate two remarkable Old Twyfordians, who at only 16 years old, have had fantastic success in their respective sports; netball and football.  Sophie and Lucia left Twyford in 2017 and are in their first year of A levels at St Swithun’s School.  They have both been signed up by clubs playing at a very high level, Surrey Storm and Southampton FC, and have received international recognition.

Sophie who played netball throughout her time at Twyford progressed through to play for England Netball at U17s and U19s level. Sophie joined Surrey Storm at thirteen and has been elevated up from the Surrey Storm Netball Performance League squad to their Vitality Netball Superleague side for the 2021 season.  Sophie made an incredible Superleague debut last month against London Pulse and scored the winning goal that secured not only victory for the Storms but the Player of the Match award.

Lucia started playing football at the age of seven with Winchester Flyers and continued her football at Twyford in the boys teams before advancing to represent England at both U15s, U16s and U18s level. Having been involved with Hampshire FA as part of Southampton’s Regional Talent Club, she registered with Southampton FC and has recently transitioned to make her debut for the Saints Women’s first team in September 2020, at home to Buckland.  In a stop/start 2020-21 season she has already scored four goals in five games!  The season restarts at Easter with a second round FA Cup fixture against Plymouth Argyle.

Well done to both these girls.  We can’t wait to follow their careers and wish them the all the best from everyone at Twyford School!
