Academic Life at Our School

At Twyford, we believe that academic excellence is born from a culture of high expectations and purposeful challenge. Our curriculum is designed to be unapologetically ambitious, setting aspirational standards that empower every child to reach their full potential. We don’t just teach to the test; we cultivate a scholarly mindset where intellectual curiosity is celebrated and academic resilience is the norm.

It is no coincidence that 26 scholarships and exhibitions were taken up by Twyford pupils last year - in academics, sport, music, art and drama - a clear reflection of the ambition and talent that runs through the School. When a child finds a passion, we have the resources, the staff, and the commitment to support and stretch them.

While we pride ourselves on achieving excellence in the core disciplines of Mathematics, English, and the Sciences, our academic landscape is notably broad. We provide a robust grounding in the Humanities and Languages (including History, Geography, French, and Latin) ensuring our pupils possess a sophisticated understanding of the world around them. This traditional foundation is integrated with forward-thinking technical and creative disciplines. Every pupil is given the platform to master: Innovation & Craft: Digital Literacy, Design, Technology, Engineering, and Cookery. The Arts: Art, Drama, Music and Dance. Physical & Mental Agility: Reasoning and competitive Sport.

Our academic framework is specifically engineered to prepare pupils for the rigours of Senior School assessments. We understand that the transition to the next stage of education is a significant milestone for any family; therefore, we provide expert, bespoke guidance throughout the entire Senior School admissions process. From the first assessment to the final offer, we stand as partners with our families, ensuring every child is placed in an environment where they will continue to thrive.

Every teacher at Twyford shares a deep passion not only for education but also for the happiness and wellbeing of our children. We recognise that mental and physical development happen at different stages for different children, and we shape each child’s learning journey by building confidence, nurturing creative thinking, and harnessing engagement and enthusiasm towards learning. Encouraging children to feel proud of who they are and confident in what they do is at the heart of our academic success.

Beyond the classroom, our academic life is enriched by a vibrant tapestry of clubs and events that allow children to deepen their interests and explore new ones. These opportunities are not just add-ons – they are integral to the way we nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence. Life at Twyford is defined by a dynamic energy, where every child finds their niche, be it on the sports field, in the laboratory, or through the Twyford Explorers.

The School also has an excellent Learning Support Department, with specialist teachers in Prep and Pre-Prep who work very closely with families to determine the most appropriate support for children. At the heart of this provision is The Hub, a unique central space available to all pupils. Open during break and lunchtime, it offers a lively, informal environment where children can further explore learning through play, independent activities and other resources. Because every child can come to The Hub, it is thought of as part of the whole school and a natural place to spend time.

At Twyford, we do more than prepare children for the next exam; we prepare them for a lifetime of discovery. By fostering a unique blend of academic ambition and personal confidence, we ensure that our pupils leave us not only with exceptional results but with the character and curiosity to make their mark on the world.

No prospectus or website can fully capture the School’s unique character. We invite you to visit us, meet our specialist staff, and see firsthand how our academic framework empowers every child to soar.
