Pastoral Care at Twyford

At Twyford, we believe that every child has unique gifts - and that with the right support, they will flourish. Our positive and encouraging educational environment is designed to help children thrive: academically, emotionally, and socially.

We are a school that is ambitious but supportive, challenging yet nurturing, forward-thinking while remaining proud of our 200-year heritage. Our pastoral care underpins every aspect of school life. It’s not an add-on - it’s at the heart of what we do. From Pre-Prep to Year 8, we take a holistic approach to education, ensuring that each child is seen, celebrated, and supported. Our values of Respect, Kindness, Honesty, Resilience, Responsibility and Friendship shape daily life at Twyford. They are not just words on a wall - they are lived out in our classrooms, playgrounds, sports pitches, and assemblies.

We understand that children grow in different ways and at different times. Our teaching team is highly skilled at shaping and nurturing each child’s individual journey, helping them to stay confident and curious every step of the way. At Twyford, we know that kindness and empathy are as important as academic results - and we celebrate children who show those qualities with as much pride as we do our top scholars, sports stars, artists and musicians.

OUR CARE DOESN'T STOP IN THE CLASSROOM

We’ve created joyful moments that celebrate the emotional development of our pupils, including our new pastoral prize days - whether that’s popcorn and films, roller coasters at Paultons Park, or bowling with friends. These are powerful ways of recognising the children’s efforts to live out our school values.

But we also know that not every day is easy. That’s why we have a strong and compassionate network of highly trained staff and close partnerships with external professionals, ensuring we are there when pupils need us most. We are proud to our the new wellbeing space, “The Nook’, opened in September 2025 - a dedicated hub for emotional and mental health support, designed to further strengthen the pastoral provision at Twyford.

Tutors see their pupils every morning for registration, accompany them during chapel, and are present for afternoon prep sessions, ensuring that every child feels supported, noticed, and encouraged throughout the day.

Our pastoral care underpins every aspect of school life.

It’s not an add-on - it’s at the heart of what we do.

Each child in the Prep School is part of a tutor group, with their tutor acting as their first point of contact and daily guide.

At Twyford, we’re here to celebrate every high and walk alongside every low. Because every child matters - always.

Tutors play a key role in monitoring wellbeing, offering guidance, and maintaining strong communication between school and home. They know each child as an individual and are the trusted adult pupils can turn to if they need advice or reassurance. All pastoral communication flows through this tutor system, creating a consistent and reliable structure of care.

This network of support is overseen by the Assistant Head of Wellbeing and the Deputy Head (Pastoral and Operations), who ensure that every child’s emotional, social, and personal development is nurtured with the same attention as their academic progress.

Twyford has also built strong relationships with many of the UK’s top independent schools. We support and guide each child to take the next step that is right for them, preparing them thoroughly for pre-testing and celebrating a wide range of senior school scholarships.

In a world that is complex and often uncertain, we strive to equip our leavers with the skills and values that will enable them to be flexible thinkers, confident collaborators, and above all, kind human beings.

We believe happy, confident children thrive - and our pastoral care is designed to make that a reality every day. At Twyford, we’re here to celebrate every high and walk alongside every low. Because every child matters - always.
