Where Every Journey Begins

Pre-Prep is the heart of where it all starts. For most children, it’s the first step on their Twyford path. These years are full of energy, discovery and joy - yet grounded in purpose. Each day blends imaginative adventure with the first, vital building blocks of learning: literacy, numeracy, science, geography and history. These formative years are pivotal in shaping a child’s future, which is why we ensure that no aspect of their development is left to chance.

Learning Through Discovery

Our youngest learners thrive through play, exploration and hands-on experience. Indoors and out, every space is carefully curated to be stimulating, safe and full of possibility.

Children in Early Years benefit from a play-based approach, where imagination and discovery drive learning. Our Forest School, much loved by pupils, offers weekly outdoor sessions where children build dens, hunt for minibeasts, toast marshmallows, and gather around the firepit for hot chocolate and stories. These experiences not only enhance language development and confidence but deepen their connection to the world around them.

A Campus Designed for Childhood

The Pre-Prep buildings sit nestled within the School’s spacious grounds, surrounded by gardens, adventure playgrounds and purpose-built outdoor learning zones. From pedal cars on the racetrack and outdoor musical instruments to water play and an open games area - there’s always something to ignite the imagination.

We also have a flourishing fruit and vegetable garden, lovingly tended by our Gardening Club, and our Pre-Prep animals - rabbits, ducks and chickens - are adored by all.

The Best of Both Worlds

While Pre-Prep has its own identity and space, we are very much part of the wider school. Our children benefit from access to the Prep School’s superb facilities: dining in the main hall, swimming in the pool, and enjoying dance, drama and music in the beautiful Mulberry Pavilion.

Specialist teaching starts early, with subjects like French, gymnastics, music, games and cookery introduced from Nursery. Our children also take part in exciting extras - from ballet, tap and modern dance to joining the choir, ukulele group or bell choir. Many also begin individual instrumental lessons.

Supportive and Specialist

No child is left behind at Twyford. Our dedicated Squirrels department ensures early intervention and tailored support when needed, helping every child feel confident, happy and secure in their learning journey.

Our experienced and passionate staff are committed to going the extra mile, ensuring every pupil is known, supported and celebrated. From Nursery through to Year 2, our curriculum is rich, well-balanced and designed to stretch curious minds while still allowing space for the magic of childhood.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

Across each half term, our children climb aboard our fleet of minibuses and head out on adventures - exploring local nature reserves, visiting museums, theatres and beaches, or delving into environmental topics at the Sustainability Centre. These trips bring learning to life in unforgettable ways.

Wraparound Care and Enrichment

We know modern family life is busy, which is why we offer wraparound care from 7.30am to 6.00pm. Our extensive programme of after-school clubs includes everything from tennis, tag rugby and yoga to cookery, mindfulness and extended Forest School sessions.
