Years 7&8: The Twyford Charter
Years 7 and 8 are a crucial phase in a child’s educational journey - years of transformation where resilience, confidence, and independence grow before stepping into the wider world of senior school.
These two years provide a vital bridge, allowing pupils to develop socially and emotionally in a supportive and nurturing environment, ensuring they are ready to embrace the challenges and opportunities of senior school with confidence.

Every day we look for ways to build character, broaden horizons and stretch our children academically. |

Confidence to step beyond comfort zones, grounded in a culture of safety and support. |
At Twyford, we believe this stage is about more than academics; it is about shaping well-rounded individuals prepared to take on new experiences with self-assurance.
We see Years 7 & 8 as the most valuable time in a child’s Prep School journey. Just ask our pupils - they will tell you how exciting and rewarding these years are. It is a time of growth, discovery and preparation, where happiness, curiosity and enthusiasm fuel their confidence in these years of rapid change. Every day we look for ways to build character, broaden horizons and stretch our children academically.
This philosophy has been the foundation of our school for years. The Twyford Charter, our carefully structured road map, captures and reinforces this ethos, offering new possibilities, eager anticipation and growing empowerment to all. Designed to shape future leaders, flexible thinkers and imaginative dreamers, it bridges the wonders of Prep School with the horizons of senior school - the ultimate preparation for the journey ahead.
Parents often weigh the choice between moving a child at Year 6 or continuing through Years 7 & 8. We understand those considerations - guaranteeing a place, forming friendships early - and for some families, a move at Year 6 is right. Yet we believe there is real and lasting merit, and joy, in allowing your child to stay with us, or join us, for Years 7 & 8. The difference in physical and emotional maturity between an 11 year old and a 13 year old is significant, and we see remarkable change in this period: expanding emotional intelligence, growing independence, taking initiative and responsibility.
The children who join at Year 7 quickly fit in, make friends and are genuinely excited by the opportunities these two years bring. Above all, they thrive in an environment of safety and security where every child is known, recognised and valued. This personal attention matters deeply during the rapid development of these years, both in and out of the classroom.
There is, of course, no universal right answer, which is why we invite families to pause and have an open conversation with the Headmaster or a member of the Leadership Team about the best path for their child.
At Twyford, we see Years 7 & 8 not simply as a continuation of earlier years, but as transition, preparation and orientation. That is why we call these two years our Charter - The Twyford Charter - the promise we make in preparing every child for senior school
THE KEY AREAS OF FOCUS IN OUR CHARTER ARE:
Academic Stretch
By Year 6, pre-testing is mostly complete. The academic outlook now becomes both broader, with increased subject choice, and deeper, with more emphasis on exploring topics in preparation for the intellectual demands of senior school. This also boosts performance at interview and greatly increases scholarship opportunities. Notably, Twyford pupils who remained with us until Year 9 have consistently been offered a place at their chosen school.
Being Good at More
By this stage, every child has discovered a talent - whether in a subject, sport, instrument or hobby. Once a child excels in one area, they often gain confidence to excel in others, provided they are in the right, familiar environment. Our Charter creates a path that ensures each child becomes multi-talented and multi-faceted before they reach senior school - a huge advantage in finding their feet.
Boarding and Broadening
Years 7 & 8 offer extended boarding options, from one night a week to weekly stays. The value is immense: pupils begin to manage their own routines, take responsibility, and feel at ease in a setting that is not home. We also believe passionately in preserving childhood for longer - for example, mobile phones are not permitted in Years 7 & 8 - giving pupils the freedom to focus on friendships, play and discovery without the pressures of the online world.
The Balance
Alongside strong academics and sport - always central at Twyford - we widen exposure to music, drama, performing arts, and a host of clubs and societies designed to spark imagination. By developing a broad range of interests, pupils arrive at senior school ready to seize opportunities and form the diverse friendships that are so important at this stage.
The Residentials
Ask any child in Years 7 & 8 what they love most, and they will likely say: “The Residentials.” From wild camping in Wales to a château in Normandy, and an outward-bound week in Italy for Year 8 leavers, these shared adventures are unforgettable. They strengthen friendships, build courage, and create memories that last a lifetime.
The Magic of Years 7 & 8
This may be the most important factor of all: these years at Twyford are magical. Pupils step out of their comfort zones within an environment of safety and security. Happiness and excitement are our hallmark, fuelling confidence in these crucial years of rapid change.
After Year 8, your child leaves us with confidence, optimism, ambition, and belief in themselves - gifts these two years have given them.
